The Great Dane is a breed of domesticated dog, most likely originating from Germany, on Earth.
At one point in his lifetime, James T. Kirk had a pet Great Dane whom he had named Butler. Kirk encountered a re-creation of Butler following his entry into the Nexus in 2293. (Star Trek Generations)
