Grendel is the water monster from the Beowulf epic. It terrorized King Hrothgar's hall until Beowulf eventually killed it.

In 2371 some photonic beings "took over" Grendel's matrix in a program Harry Kim was running in Voyager's holodeck, abducting 3 crewmembers. (VOY: "Heroes and Demons")
