There have been two shuttlecraft named Hawking aboard the USS Enterprise-D.

Hawking (2367)

The first shuttle Hawking was a type-7 shuttlecraft. In 2367, Commander William Riker used the Hawking to fly Trill Ambassador Odan to a conference on Peliar Zel so he could moderate a dispute between Alpha Moon and Beta Moon. The Hawking was attacked en route and severely damaged. Riker had to pilot the shuttle back to the Enterprise as Odan refused to be transported since it would damage the symbiont. (TNG: "The Host")

In the Diane Duane novel Dark Mirror, the Hawking was reconfigured to serve as a transporter "booster" which would allow personnel from the Enterprise to board their mirror universe counterpart without detection. The shuttle was completely gutted and had a full transporter buffer installed, but was destroyed after being detected by the ISS Enterprise-D.

Hawking (2371)

The second shuttle Hawking was of an unknown type. In 2371, it rescued Captain Jean-Luc Picard from a hilltop on Veridian III following the defeat of Tolian Soran and the crash of the Enterprise-D saucer section. (Star Trek: Generations)

The Hawking's name was not seen clearly in the final cut of the film. However, a cut scene showed Lieutenant Commanders Geordi La Forge and Worf piloting the Hawking to retrieve Picard from the desert, and the shuttle was shown landed with its name clearly visible on the exterior. The miniature of the Hawking was new, but the full-sized shuttle was a redress of one of the shuttles built for Star Trek V: The Final Frontier (the other fullscale mockup was converted into the type-6 shuttlecraft during TNG's fifth season). The shuttle was mostly unchanged from its Trek V appearance, except for updated signage and new windows on the side of the shuttle similar to those of the type-6.
Both shuttles were named for Stephen Hawking.
