Herman Melville was the author of the Human book Moby Dick. (Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan)
The lines, "All I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by," from John Masefield's Sea-Fever, were briefly attributed erroneously to Melville by Leonard McCoy, but this was subsequently corrected by Spock. (Star Trek V: The Final Frontier)
