Hermes was the god of travelers, commerce and thieves according to Greek mythology.
In reality, Hermes was a member of a powerful alien species which visited Earth in the 3rd millennium BC. According to Apollo, Hermes and all other Greek gods (save for Apollo himself) vanished when the Humans no longer needed them. (TOS: "Who Mourns for Adonais?")
