Hyper-evolution is a rapid genetic mutation and transformation which causes many years worth of evolution to take place in a matter of hours. Quite different from natural evolution, hyper-evolution includes the development of amphibian characteristics and an abandonment of sexual mores. It can be reversed with a bombardment of antiprotons from an Intrepid class starship's warp core.
Hyper-evolution is the primary symptom of Transwarp Evolutionary Syndrome, which occurs when Humans are exposed to speeds above the Warp 10 barrier without proper protections in place, such as those used on most vessels that achieve transwarp speeds. (VOY: "Threshold").
- The concept of hyper-evolution takes numerous liberties with the scientific understanding of evolution, which does not occur within a single organism and does not have a definite goal. Other instances in the canon of exceeding warp 10 have not produced hyper-evolution as a side-effect.
