Iconian script

Iconian script

The Iconian language was the language used by the extinct Iconian race.

Archaeologists speculated that three later languages, Dewan, Dinasian, and Iccobar, were derived from the ancient Iconian language due to certain shared similarities. If so, this would suggest that some Iconians were able to survive the orbital bombardment of Iconia. The hypothesis was confirmed in 2365 with the discovery of Iconia and Iconian script by the Federation. Lieutenant Commander Data derived a rudimentary translation of original Iconian from comparing words such as "mother", "father", "food", "death", "child", "home", "tribe", "pain", "love", "mine", "yours", and "ours", in those three languages.

The following examples of Iconian were from the computer in a gateway control station on Iconia:

"Kandar se, kandar ere, kandar more, kandar sete, kandar ne, kandar qetar, kandar jet, kandar piqe..."

This line was a countdown of some sort for an Iconian probe launch, spoken before the facility was destroyed. The exact translation is not known. (TNG: "Contagion")

Lokirrim script

Lokirrim script

The Zibalian language is written with almost identical characters and in a similar fashion to Iconian, suggesting that it is descended from or otherwise influenced by the Iconian language. The Lokirrim script also shares similarities with Iconian, albeit with significant differences as well.

According to Star Trek: Star Charts (p. 63) and Stellar Cartography: The Starfleet Reference Library ("Federation Historical Highlights, 2161-2385"), Dewa, Iccobar, and Dinasia were the names of star systems, which might possibly be the systems of origin for these languages. These three systems were located in the Beta Quadrant.

  • The primary of Dewa was a M-class star. In Star Trek Online's continuity Dewa's third planet was settled by the Romulan Republic, a Romulan splinter faction led by D'Tan, in the year 2409. The Republic made the planet their capital, renaming it New Romulus.
  • Iccobar was a binary system. The primary was either a G-class star (Star Trek: Star Charts) or a M-class star (Stellar Cartography). The stellar companion was a M-class star.
  • The primary of Dinasia was a K-class star. This system was quarantined.
