Inertia is a property of matter.

According to Sir Isaac Newton, the law concerning inertia states that a body in motion will remain in motion, unless acted upon by an outside force. Likewise, a body at rest will remain at rest, unless acted upon by an outside force. A body at rest is also often referred to as "inert" for this reason.
