The Iyaarans were a humanoid civilization native to the planet Iyar.

Society and culture[]

Iyaarans reproduced by post-cellular compounding, emerging fully-grown from natal pods, and as such had no children like Humans. They regarded the consumption of food as being for sustenance only, and their diet of bio-enzymatic supplement was bland in the extreme by the standards of many other humanoids. Iyaarans had no natural understanding or social forum for concepts such as pleasure, antagonism, or love. The Iyaarans used a small device, worn as a necklace, to assume the appearance of other humanoids and other genders.

Physiology[]

Physically, Iyaarans were distinguished by a pronounced brow ridge, from which two additional ridges extended almost vertically from above their eyes. A third, less pronounced ridge, densly covered in what appeared to be warts, extended vertically from above their nose. Iyaarans appeared to possess considerable endurance, possibly even superior to that of Klingons (who are known for their endurance), as Ambassador Byleth appeared none the worse after spending eleven hours in holodeck battle exercises with Worf, an experience Worf himself described as excrutiating and was sore from. When Iyaarans were injured, their metabolic rates slowed down in order to promote healing, making it look like they are dead.

History[]

The Iyaarans conducted their first cultural exchange with the Federation in 2370. During the exchange they explored certain concepts by assigning an ambassador to each. While Ambassadors Loquel and Byleth succeeded in their studies of pleasure and antagonism, Ambassador Voval felt he failed to understand the nature of love. (TNG: "Liaisons")
