James A. Contner (born 12 June 1947; age 76) is a prolific television director who directed five episodes of Star Trek: Enterprise. He has also directed episodes of 21 Jump Street, Miami Vice, seaQuest DSV, Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, The X-Files, Hercules: The Legendary Journeys, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Charmed, Angel, Smallville, The Dead Zone (starring Nicole de Boer and David Ogden Stiers), and Firefly.

Contner also worked as a cinematographer for both television and film during the 1980s. Among the movies he worked on this capacity were Cruising (1980), Nighthawks (1981, starring Persis Khambatta), Jaws 3-D (1983), The Flamingo Kid (1984), The Last Dragon (1985), and Monkey Shines (1988). He also earned an Emmy Award nomination for his work as cinematographer on the Crime Story episode "Top of the World".
