James Edwin Gunn (12 July 192323 December 2020; age 97) was a Star Trek author. He wrote one Star Trek novel, based on the screenplay "The Joy Machine" by Meyer Dolinsky, which was itself based on a story outline by Theodore Sturgeon. Besides this work, Gunn was a Nebula-award winning, prolific author of science fiction novels and short stories. Sometimes he wrote under the name Edwin James.

Gunn was born in Kansas City, Missouri, and after serving in the US Navy during World War II, he went to the University of Kansas, where he later lectured in English. Gunn was a notable writer on the history of science fiction, and science fiction criticism. He helped pioneer the study of the genre as an academic discipline; in his later life, he was director of the Center for the Study of Science Fiction which is based in the University of Kansas. Another Star Trek author Kij Johnson also worked at the Center.
