Mellis earned a BA in English from the Reed College and studied acting under Ivana Chubbuck, David Kagen, and Paul Sills. He has lent his skills to various stage plays, including versions of The Day They Shot John Lennon, Midsummer Night's Dream, Angels in America, Equus, and As I Lay Dying, and received an LA Ovation Award for Best Actor: Drama in 2002 and a LA Weekly Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor: Drama in 2003.
Mellis had guest roles in The Lazarus Man episode Jehovah and Son, Inc. (1996, with Armin Shimerman, William Lucking, and Bruce Wright) and the Carnivàle episode Insomnia (2003, with Michael J. Anderson, Adrienne Barbeau, Clancy Brown, Diane Salinger, Richard Fancy, Robert Knepper, Frank Collison, Scott MacDonald, Ted Rooney, Richard Wharton, Jon Braver, and Voyager co-star Susan Savage).
In 2004 he served as producer and casting director for the comedy Mango Kiss, in which he also played the part of Kaz. In 2005 he co-wrote and starred in the comedy Loudmouth Soup, both along Voyager guest actress Nancy Bell. More recently, he portrayed Bobby in the thriller Invisible (2006).
