Template:Realworld John Putch is an actor and director and was born on 27 July 1961 in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania. He began acting at the age of five in a summer theater run by his father, a director. He continued acting, appearing in films such as Jaws 3-D, and had small parts in Clear and Present Danger and City of Angels. He guest starred in various shows, including All in the Family (which co-starred his mother, Jean Stapleton; in the episode "Archie Is Branded," he played the Boy Scout who complained about the way Archie Bunker hung an American flag on his front door to conceal the swastika that vandals had painted on it), Family Ties, and Home Improvement. He also had a recurring role in the sitcom One Day at a Time. He took up directing in 1985 and notable work includes Valerie Flake, the 2005 remake of The Poseidon Adventure (with Peter Weller) and the documentary This is My Father. He has three Trek appearances, two of them as Benzites.

In 1981, Putch performed along with Bruce Davison in The Wave; he also acted in Kenny Rogers as The Gambler: The Adventure Continues with Gregory Sierra in 1983. He directed and starred with Ed Begley, Jr. in Waiting to Act in 1985, and was in Impure Thoughts in 1986 with Brad Dourif. In addition, he performed in Double Agent with Michael McKean in 1987 and in Something is Out There with Brian Thompson and Gregory Sierra in 1988.

Putch was in Men at Work with Leslie Hope in 1990 and also performed in After the Shock with Brian Thompson in 1990. In 1992, he was in Room for Two with Max Grodenchik. He also had parts in Beyond Suspicion with Kelsey Grammer and Corbin Bernsen in 1993 and acted along with Vaughn Armstrong and Harris Yulin in Clear and Present Danger in 1994. He played a part, along with Jonathan Frakes, Kate Mulgrew, Christopher Lloyd and Ron Fassler, in Camp Nowhere in 1994. In 1998, he was in Spoiler with Meg Foster and Jeffrey Combs.

In 2006, he directed Star Trek: Deep Space Nine guest star Kevin Rahm in Mojave Phone Booth.
