Tau Ceti III, also known as Kaferia, was an inhabited third planet in the Tau Ceti system. This system, located in the Alpha Quadrant, was approximately eight light years from Sol. (TNG: "The Naked Now", production art)

In 2259, the location of this planet was labeled on a stellar cartography chart that was seen on the USS Enterprise's ready room viewscreen. This planet's symbol had a blue color, indicating that it was affiliated with the United Federation of Planets. (SNW: "Strange New Worlds", "Spock Amok", "A Quality of Mercy")

Prior to stardate 41775, Jean-Luc Picard first met Walker Keel at "quite an exotic" bar on Tau Ceti III. (TNG: "Conspiracy")

The planet's location was labeled in a Federation star chart that was in Fleet Admiral Kirsten Clancy's office at Starfleet Headquarters in 2399 and on the bridge of the USS Titan-A in 2401. Kaferia was in or near to Federation space. (PIC: "Maps and Legends", "The Next Generation", "Disengage")

In 2401, the location of Kaferia was labeled on a star chart that was seen on the USS Stargazer's bridge viewscreen. The chart was used to show the location of the combined Starfleet-Borg armada and where it needed to go to face a galactic-level threat. (PIC: "Farewell")

Later that year, this system's position was labeled on a star chart used by Captain William T. Riker during his attempt at finding the last known location of the SS Eleos XII. (PIC: "The Next Generation")

Background information

"tow (rhymes with cow)- set-ee 3" was the pronunciation for Tau Ceti III from the script pronunciation guide.

According to Star Trek: Star Charts (p. 44) and Stellar Cartography: The Starfleet Reference Library ("Federation Historical Highlights, 2161-2385"), the Kaferia (Tau Ceti) system, in the late 24th century, was a Federation system, with Tau Ceti III listed as a member.

Apocrypha

According to The Worlds of the Federation (p. 112), Tau Ceti III was also known as Kaferia and to the natives as Kohath-Seredi. It was the planet from which Kaferian apples came, and also hosted the Kaferians, an insectoid species. Kaferia and Kaferians were also mentioned in various other novels and sources, and Kaferians were made canon when a labeled illustration from the FASA RPG module The Federation was used in an okudagram seen in "The Big Goodbye". The planet originating Kaferian apples is alluded to in "Where No Man Has Gone Before", and it is indicated that Gary Mitchell visited it multiple times, but it is not named in the episode.

The novel Tower of Babel distinguishes Outer Kaferia (Tau Ceti IV), which is a human colony from Inner Kaferia (Tau Ceti III), the homeworld of the insectoid Kaferians. Both planets are named after the Kaferi family who were the system's first explorers and settlers. Tau Ceti III and IV were conquered by the Romulans during the Earth-Romulan War, but the Kaferians managed to escape the occupation by hibernating underground.
