Background information[]
In "The Big Goodbye", an illustration of a Kaferian was briefly seen when Data was assimilating the Dixon Hill novels. The caption for the illustration identified the being as a "Kaferian". This illustration was from the FASA RPG module The Federation.
According to sources including The Worlds of the Federation (p. 112) and the Star Trek: Star Charts (p. 44), their homeworld, Kaferia, orbited Tau Ceti. According to the latter source, they lived on Tau Ceti III specifically and they were extremely friendly and close to the Federation but not members, while Star Trek: Star Charts ("United Federation of Planets I") lists them as a member.
The Worlds of the Federation shows a Kaferian with two arms and two legs, while the novel Second Nature has a Kaferian character with six limbs. According to Second Nature, Kaferians sleep in cocoon-like hibernation sacs filled with regenerative jelly. The same novel claims Kaferians don't eat flesh and their diet consists almost entirely of fruit sugars. However, the novel Fear Itself describes them as predatory arthropods.
