Miles O'Brien wearing his kayaking attire

O'Brien's kayaking wetsuit

Kayaking was a recreational activity that involved the use of a kayak for moving across water.

Miles O'Brien was especially fond of whitewater kayaking in a holoprogram in Quark's holosuites on Deep Space 9. Although he dislocated his shoulder several times, he explained his fascination of the activity, despite the accidents, was that the river "called to him". He was also fond of the challenge. (DS9: "Change of Heart", "Inquisition")

The program itself was quite challenging and O'Brien had never been able to complete it, as of mid-2371. He would often sing to keep rhythm and was especially fond of Louie, Louie. (DS9: "Heart of Stone")

Miles O'Brien started kayaking in 2366, on the holodecks on the USS Enterprise-D. (TNG: "Transfigurations")

O'Brien often invited Odo into his kayaking program. The Changeling found it to be "really quite enjoyable". Both Odo and the Krajensky Changeling knew that he had once forgot to bring a fork. (DS9: "Heart of Stone", "The Adversary")

In 2371, in order to stop O'Brien from being injured while he was kayaking, Quark told him he had misplaced the holoprogram, although O'Brien knew he was lying. (DS9: "Shakaar")

After O'Brien returned from his "imprisonment" on Argratha, Worf offered to go kayaking with him, but Miles was not interested. (DS9: "Hard Time")

In late 2373, Nog, and Jake Sisko offered to take over recalibrating several EPS regulators so O'Brien could go kayaking. (DS9: "In the Cards")

O'Brien dislocated his shoulder again kayaking in 2374, after it hadn't properly healed from the last time. A holographic O'Brien created by Luther Sloan soon after was unhurt and didn't correct Julian Bashir when he claimed that O'Brien had sustained the injury playing springball. This provided Bashir with proof that a sequence of events he was experiencing was unreal. (DS9: "Inquisition")
