The Kazon raider, also identified as a Kazon warship, Kazon patrol vessel, or patrol ship, was a type of small raider of Trabe origin. (VOY: "State of Flux", "Basics, Part II")

History[]

Many of these vessels fell into the hands of the Kazon after they overthrew the Trabe in 2346. (VOY: "Alliances")

The USS Voyager engaged Kazon raiders on several occasions in 2371 and 2372, particularly those belonging to the Kazon-Nistrim. Jal Culluh, First Maje of the Nistrim, initially commanded his sect from a raider. (VOY: "State of Flux", "Maneuvers", "Alliances", "Investigations")

Several vessels of this type were also present within the Trabe convoy encountered by Voyager in mid-2372. (VOY: "Alliances")

In early 2373, Tom Paris ran afoul of a patrolling Kazon raider while trying to seek help from the Talaxians. He was able to destroy the vessel with his Class 2 shuttle. (VOY: "Basics, Part II")

Technical data[]

Physical arrangement[]

The dimensions and specifications of the hull design could individualize as well as determine which sect the ship belonged to. (VOY: "State of Flux")

Tactical systems[]

The raider's main armament were twin disruptors mounted in the nose. (VOY: "Investigations", "Basics, Part I", et al.) It could also fire photonic charges with variable yields. (VOY: "Maneuvers") The ship was protected by shields and masking circuitry, which helped to disguise its presence from sensors. (VOY: "State of Flux")

Compared to an Intrepid-class Federation starship, which overall, had "superior defense capabilities" against one such vessel, however, according to Tuvok, they could not "prevail against three Kazon warships." (VOY: "State of Flux") Indeed, he even noted that "it would be tactically unwise to engage" a force of six ships. (VOY: "Maneuvers") USS Voyager's Captain Kathryn Janeway once likened the annoyance of being continuously assaulted on numerous occasions by these vessels to being "pecked to death by ducks." This same vessel configuration was previously said by Tuvok to "not pose a significant threat." (VOY: "Basics, Part I")

Other systems[]

The Kazon raider was technologically limited by Federation standards, lacking transporters and replicators. It had a hangar that could carry small fighters and shuttles. (VOY: "State of Flux", "Maneuvers") Additional systems included a bridge automatic containment system and force fields. (VOY: "State of Flux")

Background information[]

The "raider" designation was first mentioned in dialogue from "Initiations" in reference to the, ironically, large and clumsy Predator-class carrier vessel. The term was then re-applied to this design in "Maneuvers" and "Basics, Part I", where it had previously been designated a "Kazon warship" (as well as "Kazon ship" and "Kazon vessel") in "State if Flux" and later identified by the computer as a "patrol vessel" in "Basics, Part II. The script for "Investigations" also identified it as a "warship".

The Kazon raider was designed by Dan Curry. (Star Trek: Communicator issue 105, p. 59)

Though physically identical to the Kazon fighter, the most distinguishing visual feature between the two studio models was found the design of the forward command/piloting "module", where the fighter had larger, more traditional looking "cockpit" windows, and the raider had smaller windows suggesting a larger "bridge" area.
