The Kobliad were a spacefaring humanoid species from the planet Kobliad, who were widely dispersed throughout the Alpha, Beta, and Delta Quadrants.

History[]

The Kobliad had achieved the ability to conduct interstellar travel by mid-22nd century, and were first observed by Humans on Risa in 2152. (ENT: "Two Days and Two Nights")

Two centuries later, in 2349, Kobliad Security officer Ty Kajada began her twenty year pursuit of criminal scientist Rao Vantika. After Kajada finally captured him, Vantika set the Reyab, the Kobliad transport he was transported aboard, on fire near the vicinity of Deep Space 9 in 2369. After transferring his life force into Doctor Julian Bashir, Vantika attempted to hijack a shipment of deuridium, a substance need to prolong his life, from the Gamma Quadrant, but was stopped by the station's crew. (DS9: "The Passenger")

It was not uncommon to find the Kobliad in seedier locales, such as a bar on Ronara Prime, or visiting the Promenade aboard Deep Space 9. (TNG: "Preemptive Strike"; DS9: "Rules of Acquisition")

One Kobliad, Yteppa, worked for the Obsidian Order, and assisted in kidnapping Major Kira Nerys in 2371. (DS9: "Second Skin")

Other members of this species were present on Quarra in the Delta Quadrant in the late 2370s. (VOY: "Workforce")

Physiology[]

The Kobliads had a distinguished bone structure connecting the nose and the hairline over the forehead.

By the late 24th century the Kobliad people were near extinction, the Kobliad needed deuridium to stabilize their cell structure, which prolonged their lifespans.

During the late 2360s, the Federation was working to supply them with the substance, but even despite new deposits opening up in the Gamma Quadrant after the discovery of the Bajoran wormhole, the substance remained too scarce to service their entire population. As a consequence, some Kobliad had gone underground to get it. (DS9: "The Passenger")

Background information[]

The producers wanted just a minor set of makeup appliances for the appearance of the Kobliad in "The Passenger". As such, the makeup department created a simple ridged forehead that ran from the hairline down to the tip of the actor's nose and a forehead piece with an extended set of ridges. (Star Trek: Aliens & Artifacts, p. 150)

In later appearances, this species was identified in the call sheet of "Workforce" were listed as "Kaitlen", or "Kaitlin" on the call sheet of "Two Days and Two Nights". This production name "Kaitlen"/"Kaitlin" presumably referred to the first actress to appear as a Kobliad, Caitlin Brown, a fairly common naming practice used by Michael Westmore in defining his established designs.

According to Star Trek: Star Charts (p. 47) and Stellar Cartography: The Starfleet Reference Library ("Federation Historical Highlights, 2161-2385"), there was a star system named Kobliad, which might possibly be the system of origin for this species, in the Alpha Quadrant. This was a binary system with a pair of F-class stars. In the late 24th century, it was an independent system.

Apocrypha[]

In the Star Trek: Titan novels The Red King and Orion's Hounds, a Kobliad named Fo Hachesa serves aboard the USS Titan. The species is described in the books as sometimes being difficult to understand.

In the video game Star Trek: Resurgence, Commander Jara Rydek, the first officer of the USS Resolute is a Human/Kobliad hybrid.
