A lava tube is a natural cavern which serves or once served as conduits for lava.

The cave network below Celtris III included at least one lava tube. The unnamed planet on which Sisko's attack ship crashed during the early days of the Dominion War similarly had caves including lava tubes. (TNG: "Chain of Command, Part I"; DS9: "Rocks and Shoals")
