Medical life support

Spock on complete life support

In medicine, life support was a device or series of devices designed to sustain a patient who was incapable of performing bodily functions such as respiration, circulation, etc.

In 2268, James T. Kirk asked Doctor Leonard McCoy why Spock was on complete life support, wondering if the Vulcan had been dead. McCoy replied that Spock had been worse than dead, as his brain was missing. (TOS: "Spock's Brain")

In 2368, Worf's cerebral cortex was placed on life support during an operation to reverse his paralysis. Nurse Alyssa Ogawa noted that this took place at 0831 hours. Later, when Dr. Toby Russell asked how much longer he could remain on life support, Ogawa answered that he could last another twenty-seven minutes. (TNG: "Ethics")

In 2375, Dr. Julian Bashir reported that Luther Sloan's higher cortical functions would fail within an hour even if he remained of full life support. (DS9: "Extreme Measures")
