Light is an electromagnetic radiation that can be perceived as color by the eyes.
A unit of light is called a photon.
Both cloaking devices and holograms function by manipulating light.
Because of the limited number of light sources in space, most kinds of starships are equipped with running lights, which either highlight sections of the hull or act as location markers of various blinking patterns and colors, designed to provide a starship's location when visual sighting is the only means available.
A Federation starship's running lights can also be used to identify the vessel's status in situations that preclude the beaming over of an away team, such as quarantine. (TNG: "Unnatural Selection")
The distance that light travels in one year is a unit of measurement for starship navigation and the speed that light travels is a unit of measurement for starship velocity.
