The M16 is a series of automatic rifles chambered for the 5.56x45mm NATO rifle cartridge that were made by Colt Firearms for the United States Armed Forces. The M16 was extensively used by the United States and her allies from the 1960's to the early/mid 21st century with many variants of this rifle being produced by Colt and other Earth arms manufacturers during and after the Cold War era.
US Marine sentries used M16A1 rifles on board the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise and these rifles were used by the Marine sentries in Chekov's arrest. (Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home)
