The Maxia Zeta star system
Maxia Zeta IV was the fourth planet in the Maxia Zeta planetary system. This system was located in the Alpha Quadrant.
Though it was not habitable, it was still located in the habitable zone of its star, Maxia Zeta and therefore a candidate for terraforming. (Another candidate for terraforming was Maxia Zeta III.) The planet had several moons, some of them cratered deeply enough to hide a ship.
The USS Stargazer became the first manned Federation starship to chart the planet in 2355. However, they were unexpectedly attacked by a Ferengi ship in what became known as Battle of Maxia. (TNG: "The Battle")
Maxia Zeta, the primary of the Maxia Zeta system, was in a star chart that was seen in Star Trek Generations. This chart depicted the location of planets, stars, and star systems in the Alpha Quadrant. Based on the dimensions of the circles used to mark locations on the star chart seen in "Generations", this planet was located relatively near to the USS Enterprise-D.
Despite this early encounter with the Ferengi, official first contact was not made until 2364.
According to the Star Trek: Star Charts ("United Federation of Planets I"), Maxia Zeta IV was located in non-aligned space, in the Alpha Quadrant.
