Maxwell Burke

Lieutenant Maxwell Burke was a Human Starfleet officer in the late 24th century. He was serving aboard the USS Equinox under Captain Rudy Ransom when the ship disappeared in 2371. (VOY: "Equinox", "Equinox, Part II")

Early history

Maxwell Burke attended Starfleet Academy in the 2360s. While there, he had a relationship with fellow Academy student B'Elanna Torres, whom he nick-named BLT (B'Elanna's initials). In return, B'Elanna used to call him petaQ occasionally and the two ultimately broke off their relationship, although they remained friends. The last time they talked to each other, Burke expressed his intent on dropping out of Starfleet.

Despite this, Burke continued his Starfleet career, and by 2371, he was assigned security chief aboard the Equinox. In that year, however, the Equinox disappeared while exploring the asteroid belt of an uncharted star system.

The Delta Quadrant

As it turns out, Equinox was pulled into the Delta Quadrant by the Caretaker, a fate that would befall the USS Voyager later that year. After the ship's original executive officer was killed, Captain Ransom promoted Burke to the position. Burke survived the first five years of the starship's voyage through the quadrant.

In late 2375, the Equinox encountered Voyager and Burke was reunited with his old girlfriend, B'Elanna, for the first time in some ten years. Ultimately, however, Voyager's commanding officer, Captain Janeway, discovered that the Equinox was being powered by using the energy from nucleogenic lifeforms. After a series of conflicts between Voyager and Equinox, Captain Ransom was willing to surrender and have his crew beamed aboard Voyager. Burke mutinied and arrested Ransom, and took control of the Equinox.

Upon assuming control he took a more aggressive approach against Voyager, ordering the Equinox EMH on board Voyager to transmit Voyager's shield frequency. He was able to severely damage Voyager, but his attack was thwarted when Captain Ransom was able to regain control of some of the ship's functions.

Stuck in a ship about to explode, Burke was not willing to surrender. He attempted to make his way to a shuttle but was killed by one of the nucleogenic lifeforms in the process.

Maxwell Burke was portrayed by actor Titus Welliver.
