A political map of the Middle East

Pyramids, Timestream

The ancient Pyramids, located in the Middle East

The Middle East was an ancient region on Earth, hosting some of the oldest known Human civilizations on the planet. The region of Mesopotamia was located in the Middle East as was the ancient city of Uruk. (TOS: "Requiem for Methuselah", TNG: "Darmok")

The Pyramids were also located in the Middle Eastern region, specifically the nation of ancient Egypt. The Middle East also figured prominently in the Bible, with such biblical characters as Jesus, Moses, and Lazarus hailing from the region. (TOS: "Requiem for Methuselah")

Alexander the Great once controlled an empire that encompassed parts of the Middle East. King Solomon was also another ruler who maintained a kingdom in the area. The immortal Flint once claimed to have once lived as both of these ancient rulers (TOS: "Requiem for Methuselah")

During the 20th and 21st centuries, several independent nation states existed in the Middle East. Among these were countries such as Egypt, Iraq, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Syria, and Yemen. The African nation of the Sudan was sometimes viewed as being part of the Middle East, as were the Asia countries of Pakistan and Afghanistan. (TOS: "The Cage")

Osama Bin Laden

Many of the countries in the Middle East have never been directly mentioned in dialogue, but can clearly be seen on a world map in the remastered version of the "The Cage".

The Middle East was the "starting point" for several of Earth's most notorious characters. Both Saddam Hussein and Osama Bin Laden hailed from the Middle East and, in 1992, Khan Noonien Singh rose to power in the region and eventually gained control of nearly a quarter of the Earth's population. (ENT: "Future Tense"; TOS: "Space Seed")
