The middle meningeal artery is part of the human circulatory system and provides blood to the human brain.

Pavel Chekov once traveled back in time to 1986 and was seriously injured while fleeing arrest from Earth authorities of the time. He fell from the deck of an aircraft carrier and went into a coma, diagnoised by doctors of the period as suffering from an expanding hematoma.

Doctor Leonard McCoy was able to reach Chekov and save him "from the hands of 20th century medicine". McCoy correctly diagnoised Chekov's condition as a tearing of the middle meningeal artery, to which McCoy's 20th century counterpart snickered and asked if McCoy's degree was in dentistry.
