A mnemonic memory circuit was a piece of late 23rd century computer technology. Trapped in Earth's past, Spock attempted to construct one so that he and James T. Kirk might view the recordings trapped within Spock's tricorder – recordings that would tell them how McCoy had changed history, erasing the Federation, and thereby how they might correct the problem. Spock found it difficult to work with 20th century technology, viewing it as little better than stone knives and bearskins. Nonetheless, he was able to construct a circuit that briefly allowed the stranded officers to learn that Edith Keeler was the key – history's proper shape depended on whether she lived or died. Mnemonic memory circuit

Spock's makeshift mnemonic memory circuit.

A mnemonic memory circuit was a 23rd century computer technology used for accessing data in information storage devices.

In 1930, after having traveled back in time from the year 2267 through the sentient time portal known as the Guardian of Forever, Spock attempted to construct a mnemonic memory circuit using period components, in order to access information stored on his tricorder taken from the Guardian, to ascertain how Doctor McCoy had changed history. Spock was frustrated in his attempts, however, equating the materials he was using to build the circuit to "stone knives and bearskins." Nevertheless, by temporarily overloading the circuit, Spock was able to access the information and determine that, in order for Captain Kirk and himself to restore the timeline, Edith Keeler, a social worker, must be allowed to die. (TOS: "The City on the Edge of Forever")
