Crewman Mortimer Harren is a Starfleet officer, that was one of many trapped on Voyager when it was trapped in the Delta Quadrant.

Mortimer Harren was born and raised on Vico V, a planet known for its active sky, which may have inspired Harren's interest into cosmology. He held five advanced degrees in theoretical cosmology.

In 2371, he wanted to apply to the Institute of Cosmology on Orion I, but needed one year of hands-on experience in order to qualify. So he joined the crew of the USS Voyager.

On its shakedown mission, it was brought to the Delta Quadrant by the Caretaker's array. When Captain Janeway destroyed the array to save the Ocampa, he became stranded in the Delta Quadrant with the rest of the Voyager crew. This caused Harren to become bitter and he spent much of his time involved in theoretical calculations in the plasma relay room on Deck 15.

One of Harren's many complex theorems

He was once working on Schlezholt's Theory of Multiple Big Bangs.

In 2376, Seven of Nine conducted an efficiency analysis of the ship's crew, she concluded that Harren and two other crewmembers were unable to perform at acceptable levels. Seven felt that Harren's talents were not being put to good use. Chief of Engineering B'Elanna Torres had previously tried to engage him in more advanced tasks, but he did not complete them.

Captain Janeway decided to take Harren and the other two crew members in the Delta Flyer, with hopes of inspiring them, Harren was assigned to look for subspace particle decay which could have offered new information about star formation.

During the mission something struck the Delta Flyer, knocking its propulsion offline and neutralizing 90 percent of its antimatter. Harren suggested that a dark matter proto-comet was responsible for the occurance. He also proposed that they eject the rest of their antimatter to avoid further damage from impact. Janeway felt his theory was still an unproven hypothesis and she needed more evidence.

Later on the mission, William Telfer was abducted and inhabited by dark matter life-forms. One of the aliens lept from an incision wound on his neck and was killed by Harren with a phaser after he had been ordered by Janeway not to fire. Upon his killing the lifeform Janeway told him it may have simply been trying to communicate.

Harren tries to distract the dark-matter lifeforms

Afterwards, Harren tried to save the others by leaving in one of the escape pods. He told Janeway that it would allow the Delta Flyer the time needed to make an escape. Instead, Janeway went after him and transported him back from the pod seconds before it collided. (VOY: "Good Shepherd")
