A trinary star system
A trinary star system is a star system made up of three stars. Two or three of the stars may orbit around a common center of gravity, also known as their barycenter. Often, trinary stars consist of a binary pair that orbit each other in relatively close proximity with a third star that is further away, in a more "planetary" style orbit.
In 2152, radiation from a trinary star system caused the crew of the Enterprise NX-01 to obsess over insignificant details and tasks. (ENT: "Singularity")
In 2372, Jadzia Dax asked for Captain Benjamin Sisko's permission to send a science team to investigate a trinary star system. Sisko told her the team could take the USS Rubicon. (DS9: "Accession")
