Multiple star systems are a form of the standard solar system model which contain more than one active star.

A binary star system

A binary star system is a solar system that has two stars at its center. Usually, the two stars orbit each other around their common center of gravity, also known as their barycenter, but it is also possible for the second star to orbit around the other, in the same manner as a planet would.

A trinary star system

A trinary star system is a solar system made up of three stars. Two or three of the stars could possibly orbit around a common center of gravity, also known as their barycenter. Often, trinary stars consist of a binary pair that orbit each other in relatively close proximity and a third star that is further away, in a more "planetary" style orbit.

In 2372, Jadzia Dax asked for Captain Benjamin Sisko's permission to send a science team to investigate a trinary star system. Sisko told her the team could take the USS Rubicon. (DS9: "Accession")
