This probability was buttressed by the tactical situation monitor which depicted this quasar as being near to Alpha Carinae. Alpha Carinae was likewise identified by the star chart as being in the Alpha Quadrant.|"The Explored Galaxy" was a map of charted space in the Alpha Quadrant. Alpha Carinae was located west of the Tholian Assembly, and Makus III was located between the Assembly and Romulus. Both locations were identified in The Search, Part II as being located in this quadrant. The chart, first seen chronologically in 6, was also seen in several Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine episodes set in the 24th century, from the year 2364 to 2370. AT: "xx" Murasaki 312, or the Murasaki Quasar, was a quasar-like electromagnetic phenomenon.
Location
Murasaki 312 was three days away from Makus III at warp speed 1. (TOS: "The Galileo Seven")
In 2367, the location of Mursasaki 312 was labeled on a tactical situation monitor in Captain Benjamin Maxwell's ready room on the USS Phoenix. (TNG: "The Wounded", okudagram)
In 2368, the location of Murasaki 312 was labeled on a tachyon detection grid on one of the viewscreens of the USS Enterprise-D bridge. (TNG: "Redemption II", okudagram remastered)
In 2366, in an alternate timeline, during the Federation-Klingon War, the location of Murasaki 312 was labeled on a tactical situation monitor in the ready room aboard the Enterprise-D. (TNG: "Yesterday's Enterprise", okudagram)
History
In 2267, this quasar ionized an entire sector, including four star systems. This quasar, and others like it, generated what was known as the Murasaki Effect.
Sensor readings from the Enterprise attempted to describe Murasaki 312:
- Negative ionic concentration – 1.64 ×109 meters
- Radiation wavelength – 370 ångströms
- Harmonics – upward along entire spectrum
Captain James T. Kirk of the USS Enterprise was under standing orders to investigate formations similar to Murasaki 312, consequently delaying the Enterprise from a medical supply mission to Makus III, and sending the shuttlecraft Galileo to survey the formation. (TOS: "The Galileo Seven")
In 2328, this was the destination for passengers traveling from Midos V Satellite City Spaceport via commercial transport. Suzi Shimizu traveled on the SS Manoa, John Van Citters on the SS Kogin, and Dennis McCarthy, Joe Bauer, and David Anderson on the SS Wisconsin. (TNG-R: "Inheritance", okudagram)
In 2367, around stardate 44390,1, the USS Enterprise-D conducted a long-range sensor scan of the Murasaki Quasar. (TNG: "Data's Day")
