Musical notes

Musical notes

Music was the art of the arrangement of vocal, instrumental, or mechanical sounds. It was generally organized in succession by rhythm, melody, or harmony, and had the ability to evoke emotion. One who composed or played music was known as a musician.

Music has been described in many different ways, reflecting its subjective nature. Uhura would often hum traditional Kenyan folk music whenever she was nervous. According to Spock, the Vulcans considered the "fundamental nature" of musical notes as what makes them "pleasing to the ear". (SNW: "Children of the Comet") Data once described music as a, "collection of acoustic vibrations." (TNG: "Masks")

The Doctor described to the Quarra that "music is more than mathematics, and I am much more than a program with musical subroutines. All of my experience, all of my passion goes into every note that I sing. When you listen to me, when my singing moves you, you're not just hearing notes. You're hearing my artistry, my soul." (VOY: "Virtuoso")

While T'Pol was assigned to Earth, during the early half of the 22nd century, she lived at the Vulcan Compound in San Francisco. On one occasion, she was curious about Human recreation and wanted to see some of it for herself, so she left the compound and walked until she heard music. She described it as "unusual, chaotic, but I was drawn to it." She recalled going into the restaurant where musicians were playing and sat at a table to listen. She later recalled, upon further listening to the music, feeling "invigorated [...] briefly", before returning to the compound. (ENT: "Fusion")

The Novans produced music using skulls and bones as musical instruments. (ENT: "Terra Nova")

Jadzia Dax once believed that none of the hosts of the Dax symbiont had musical talent, prior to discovering the existence of Joran Dax, a renowned musician, but also a murderer.

It was possible for a computer to scan a recording of a piece of music against known files and identify a composition. (DS9: "Equilibrium")

B'Elanna Torres had what was described as a limited appreciation of music limited to "a smattering of Klingon drinking songs." (VOY: "Virtuoso")

The Changelings, living within their Great Link, did not partake in music. (PIC: "Dominion")
