Musical Instruments are found on many different planets. They can be divided into string instruments, wind instruments, percussion instruments and mental instruments.

String instruments

Music

As the name implies, these instruments possess strings that need to vibrate in order to produce sound. This can be achieved by either plucking the strings, drawing a bow across them or striking the strings with a hammer.

Human instruments belonging to this group include guitars, kitharas, violins, mandolins, cellos and pianos. The Vulcan lute also belongs to this group.

Dr Sevrin's followers played a variety of instruments, they all belonged to the group of string instruments. Mavig played a wheel-shaped, harp-like instrument. Adam played a 6-stringed instrument, similar to a guitar but without the resonating body. (TOS: "The Way to Eden")

Commander William T. Riker kept a small holographic simulation of two women playing harp-like instruments in his quarters. When he needed to relax, he would turn on the hologram and listen to the music. (TNG: "Haven")

A similar instrument was played by the Edo on Rubicun III (TNG: "Justice") and by Katie aboard the USS Enterprise-D, her instrument had 18 strings however. (TNG: "When the Bough Breaks")

The Edo played another, smaller instrument that looks like a transparent harp. (TNG: "Justice")

In a holographic recreation of the Café des Artistes in the year 2342 a musician played a futuristic instrument that consisted of a small rectangular box with several glass tubes. (TNG: "We'll Always Have Paris")

Nella Daren played a rollable small-scale piano from Mataline II. (TNG: "Lessons")

The Trill also possess small piano-like instruments that can be easily transported and larger stationary pianos. Joran Dax was a talented player of this instrument. (DS9: "Equilibrium", "Field of Fire")

One crewmember of the USS Enterprise-D played a futuristic bass-like instrument during a concert in Ten Forward that also Commander William T. Riker was participating in. (TNG: "Second Chances")

An alien musician played a strange percussion instrument in Quark's Bar when it was re-opened after the Cardassians withdrew from Bajor and the station in 2369. (DS9: "Emissary")

Klingons also have small string instruments, like the one the Klingon chef aboard Deep Space 9 often used to entertain his customers. (DS9: "Melora")

A trio of Bajoran musicians gave a small performance on Deep Space 9's promenade during the Bajoran Gratitute Festival in 2371, one of them was playing an instrument very similar to the Vulcan lute. (DS9: "Fascination") The same instrument was also played by Risians. (DS9: "Let He Who Is Without Sin...")
