The Mutara sector is a region of space under Federation control. It is a significant distance from the Delphic Expanse.
In 2165 in an alternate timeline, the sector was used by Earth Starfleet to evacuate the last survivors of the Xindi assault on Earth. Rigelian flame gems were illegal in the sector at that time. (ENT: "Twilight")
- Presumably, the illegality of Rigelian flame gem is true in the main timeline as well.
In 2267, the SS Botany Bay was discovered by the USS Enterprise adrift in the Mutara sector. The Botany Bay was to have originally been towed to Starbase 12, the command base of the sector, however Captain James T. Kirk thought it in better interest of Khan Noonien Singh and his crew to maroon them on Ceti Alpha V. (TOS: "Space Seed")
In 2285, Khan hijacked the USS Reliant from Ceti Alpha V, and detonated the Genesis Device within the Mutara Nebula, creating the Genesis Planet. As a result of the incident, travel in and out of the sector was restricted by Starfleet. Additional permits were required, making commercial and non-military travel more difficult and more expensive. (Star Trek III: The Search for Spock)
