Hermes class

USS Hermes schematic

The USS Hermes (NCC-585) was a prototype for the Federation's Template:ShipClass scouts, which were in service during the mid-23rd century.

Background

This ship was never directly seen on screen, but it is mentioned by name and registry number in background dialogue in Star Trek: The Motion Picture. Its schematics (taken from Franz Joseph's Star Trek Star Fleet Technical Manual) appeared on the Enterprise computer displays in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan and Star Trek III: The Search for Spock.

The name is presumably a tribute to Hermes, the ancient Greek messenger-god although the name could be from the Royal Navy flagship HMS Hermes that led the British task force in the Falklands War in the late 20th century.
