"Old Man" Newsome was a holographic character from the Deadwood holodeck program. He was the operator of the town's telegraph office.
In 2369 Worf was forced to cannibalize his telegraph in order to link it with his combadge and create a force field when the holodeck safety protocols went offline and he was faced with the prospect of a shootout. (TNG: "A Fistful of Datas")
