Nilz Baris was the Federation Undersecretary for Agriculture in 2267, stationed at Deep Space Station K-7 to oversee a shipment of quadrotriticale grain to Sherman's Planet. Baris summoned Captain James T. Kirk and the crew of the USS Enterprise to the K-7 station to protect the grain through the use of a Priority One distress call.
