The optical data network relay, which was often abbreviated as ODN relay, is an important computer component aboard Federation starships in the 24th century.
On the USS Enterprise-D, there was an ODN relay linking directly from engineering to the engineering console on the bridge. There was also a relay that acted as a back-up engineering computer.
Chief Engineer Geordi La Forge once tried, unsuccessfully, to use it to regain control of the Enterprise from Reginald Barclay, who had integrated his mind with the computer following an encounter with an alien probe. (TNG: "The Nth Degree")
ODN relays are also used by the Cardassians in their space stations, such as Terok Nor (Deep Space 9). (DS9: "Sacrifice of Angels")
ODN relays also connect the systems of a Danube-class runabout to its isolinear computer core.
