Ship in san francisco

A passenger liner in San Francisco Bay during the 2150s.

San Francisco liner

A luxury liner cruising into San Francisco in 2259.

A passenger liner or ocean liner was a type of ocean-going vessel dedicated to transporting passengers on a cruise; those that focused on comfort were called cruise ships or pleasure boat.

The "ancient" (early-20th century) steamship RMS Titanic was also a well-known passenger liner, as was The Queen Mary. (VOY: "Year of Hell"; Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home)

The revived late-20th century Human, Ralph Offenhouse, suggested to USS Enterprise-D Captain Jean-Luc Picard, that he "should take some lessons from the QE2. Now that's an efficient operation," when it came to service aboard a ship. Picard, who was not familiar with what a "QE2" was, was informed by Data that it was "a passenger liner which mostly traveled Earth's Atlantic Ocean," which the insulted Picard responded, "He's comparing the Enterprise to a cruise ship?" (TNG: "The Neutral Zone")

During the 2150s, passenger liners still sailed out of San Francisco. (ENT: "Shadows of P'Jem", "Shockwave, Part II", "Regeneration", "First Flight", "Home")

When Gosis disbelieved that "Captain" Jonathan Archer was not a military spy in 2152, he sarcastically suggested that "I suppose you're the Captain of a pleasure boat." (ENT: "The Communicator")

In 2259 of the alternate reality, a passenger liner could be seen from Starfleet Headquarters cruising through San Francisco Bay. (Star Trek Into Darkness)
