Odona was the daughter of Ambassador Hodin of the planet Gideon. Gideon was suffering from overpopulation since the people were immune to disease. Hodin hoped to alleviate this problem, by having Odona contract Vegan choriomeningitis, which was carried in Kirk's blood. Kirk had been cured of the disease, but Odona had no immunity to it. Hodin hoped that Odona's death from the disease would inspire other Gideons to follow her lead so that Gideon's population could be reduced.
Doctor Leonard McCoy cured Odona. She was returned to her planet with vegan choriomeningitis organisms in her blood to infect her people. (TOS: "The Mark of Gideon")
