Odana was the daughter of Prime Minister Hodin of the planet Gideon. Gideon was suffering from overpopulation since the people were immune to disease. Hodin hoped to alleviate this problem, by having Odana contract Vegan choriomeningitis, which was carried in Kirk's blood. Kirk had been cured of the disease, but Odana had no immunity to it. Hodin hoped that Odana blood could be used to infect enough of the population of Gideon so that a plague would reduce its population, even though this meant the death of his daughter. Although Doctor Leonard McCoy was able to cure Odana, she still retained the organisms to infect her people. She is returned to her planet, and Hodin's plan proved to be successful.
