Sisko pagh'tem'far

Benjamin Sisko in a trance-like state while experiencing a pagh'tem'far in 2373

A pagh'tem'far is a sacred vision in the Bajoran religion.

In 2373, Benjamin Sisko received a series of pagh'tem'far after receiving a plasma shock in a holosuite. In these visions, he was in the ancient city of B'hala, and could see the past, present, and future. A swarm of locusts appeared in the sky and hovered over the city, before heading off towards Cardassia. The visions were prophetic of the later Dominion-Cardassian alliance, and the coming Dominion War. Sisko came to believe that Bajor must "stand alone", else the locusts would destroy it; on this basis, he interrupted the signing ceremony that would have established Bajor as a Federation member, derailing the world's entry into the Federation.

While he was having the pagh'tem'far, Sisko showed some unusual synaptic potentials in his brain, which began to threaten his life when they depolarized his basal ganglia. Sisko insisted that he be allowed to complete the visions, but Jake Sisko, as his next-of-kin, authorized Doctor Julian Bashir to perform surgery to correct the condition. Afterward, Sisko claimed that he had nearly "understood it all." (DS9: "Rapture")

Teero Anaydis, in one of his illegal mind control experiments, programmed Tuvok to respond to the code phrase "Pagh'tem'far B'tanay" and implant the same mind control into all of the Maquis via mind meld, ultimately causing a mutiny. (VOY: "Repression")
