The phaser array on a standard Federation ship is a link of arrays that when fired, produce enough energy to fire a phaser. Phaser disruptor beams are commonly found on Federation starships. On many ships, it is the primary weapon fire. Starships have differentiating amounts of phaser banks. The Starship Enterprise, for example, has twelve phaser banks. Other ships, like voyager, has an average of eight phaser banks. When Voyager was flung into the Delta Quadrant by the Caretaker, Captain Kathryn Janeway insisted that the Crew of Voyager use phasers instead of torpedoes because they only had a limited amount. Caretaker

The USS Voyager, an Intrepid class starship, employing its phaser array strips against a Borg probe.

A phaser array is an arrangement of phaser emitters located in strategic areas of a starship, space station, or other vessel. In the 23rd century, phaser arrays had smaller numbers of emitters, and were commonly referred to as phaser banks. (TOS: "The Corbomite Maneuver", "Balance of Terror") Late 24th century Starfleet vessels and facilities were equipped with phaser arrays with much larger numbers of emitters.

On Intrepid class vessels, phaser arrays were arranged in strips along the top and the bottom of the saucer section. The phaser energy traveled along the strips to the best position for the targeting computer to fire the beams at the target. This eliminated the need for forward or aft arrays, as the strips allowed the beams to be fired from any point along them, forward or aft.

The later Sovereign-class starships originally had twelve arrays, including seven dorsal arrays and five ventral arrays. (Star Trek: First Contact) By 2379, four additional arrays were added to the nacelle pylons of the Sovereign-class USS Enterprise-E, bringing the total complement of arrays to sixteen. (Star Trek Nemesis)

In 2371, Korinas asked Benjamin Sisko for information on the USS Defiant's phaser array. (DS9: "Defiant")

In the early months of the Dominion War, the crew of the USS Defiant would place depleted phaser array power cells in the mess hall, as a sign they would not stop fighting. (DS9: "Behind the Lines")

Cardassian Galor class vessels were equipped with multiple phaser arrays which could cover 360°s. These were used during Operation Return primarly to destroy Federation attack fighters. (DS9: "Sacrifice of Angels") Template:PhaserTechnology
