A plasma streamer was a stream of plasma between two stars of a binary system, created when one star's gravity was strong enough to pull stellar material from the other. Plasma streamers created ionized distortion fields surrounding them, greatly reducing the efficacy of sensors, transporters, and even tractor beams.
In 2369, the USS Enterprise-D was sent to the Igo sector to investigate the loss of contact with the USS Yosemite, a science vessel sent to remotely observe the stream. The Enterprise discovered that quasi-energy microbes lived within the streamer's distortion field. (TNG: "Realm Of Fear")
In 2383, Dal R'El unintentionally guided the USS Protostar to a binary system consisting of a white dwarf in the final stages of tearing apart its red giant companion. The ship became caught in the white dwarf's gravity well and entered the plasma streamer between the two stars, where it was bombarded by asteroidal debris. (PRO: "Starstruck")
