Polarons are particles.
The Dominion uses them in their weapons, such as phased polaron beams, as well as in their plasma rifles. (DS9: The Jem'Hadar, "Tacking Into the Wind")
Polarons also emit deadly radiation. Starfleet Science developed modified polaron emitters that were designed to destabilize a changeling's physiology. (DS9: "Apocalypse Rising")
