Template:Sidebar character Rachel Garrett was a Starfleet officer serving in the early 24th century. In 2344, Garrett was captain of the starship USS Enterprise-C. In that year, the Enterprise responded to a distress call from the Klingon outpost on Narendra III, which was under attack by Romulan forces. The Klingons were impressed by Garrett's bravery in unsuccessfully trying to defend their outpost, and shortly afterward entered into a friendly alliance with the Federation. Captain Garrett was presumed killed during this Romulan attack, along with most of her crew.

During the battle the Enterprise was brought forward in time to 2366 by the formation of an unexpected temporal rift. Suffering from severe internal injuries, Garrett was beamed aboard the USS Enterprise-D. Once recovered, Garrett was prepared to remain in that timeframe to assist the Federation in their war with the Klingon Empire, which the Federation was about to lose.

However, Captain Jean-Luc Picard was able to convince Garrett to take her Enterprise back to through the rift to the battle at Narendra III and restore timeline. Unfortunately, before the Enterprise could return, Captain Garrett was killed when a photon torpedo fired by a Bird-of-Prey hit the bridge, sending a piece of shrapnel into her head and killing her. (TNG: "Yesterday's Enterprise")

Appendices

Background

Rachel Garrett was played by actress Tricia O'Neil; stunts for Garrett's death scene were performed by Donna Garrett.

According to the Star Trek: The Next Generation Companion, the last name "Garrett" was chosen by story co-writer Trent Christopher Ganino, who took the name from a pizzeria in San Diego, Ganino's hometown.

In an early draft of the script, the captain was named Richard Garrett. Captain Garrett is the only canon female captain of a USS Enterprise. (Demora Sulu was captain of the USS Enterprise-B in Star Trek novels.)

A biographical readout, written by Michael Okuda, in the PC game Starship Creator Warp II stated that Rachel Garrett was born in 2300. If so, and the date is taken along with her history from the novels, she was admitted to Starfleet Academy at a very young age.

According to Rick Sternbach, the fatal shrapnel was a wing from a VF-1 Valkyrie.
