The Earth Starfleet ranks are based on the ranks of old Earth militaries, in particular the United States of America's Naval Fleet.
22nd Century
The Earth Starfleet pips of the 22nd Century are a rectangle shape and are worn on the right side of the chest.

Federation
The Federation ranks are based on the ranks of old Earth militaries, in particular the United States of America's Naval Fleet.
23rd Century
No pips were worn on 23rd Century Federation uniforms. Instead, a band of varying gold patterns was imprinted on the officer's sleves at the wrist to show rank.
24th Century
The Federation pips of the 24th Century are a circular shape and are worn on the right-side of the collar.

Klingon
A ceremonial sash of varing design and material is worn by Klingon officers to show rank and status in society. The sash can be made of many materials, most commonly of gold thread or silver metal, such as those worn by Lieutenant Commander Worf and General Martok. On the upper section of the sash is an emblem.
