What is known about the ''Renaissance''-class is that there the vessel contained no ASRV lifeboats on board the ship during its initial run. Emergency craft such as the ASRV were first installed in the USS ''Hokkaido'', and in subsequent refits of the ''Renaissance'' spaceframe for the Dominion Wars, this subclass of the ''Renaissance'' spaceframe was considered to be the ''Renaissance''-class, Mark II.

All information about the ASRV refit of the ''Renaissance'- class comes from the ''[[Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Technical Manual]]'' and information released by the staff writers and producers of Deep Space Nine. This is one of the few mentioned starship types that never appeared in any live action Star Trek Series.

Background information

Information on this class designation was originally derived from an okudagram described as a starship mission status that was displayed in the observation lounge starting around TNG Season 4 and was originally described in the Star Trek Encyclopedia. The Encyclopedia (2nd ed., p. 406) states that the class was named for the period in European history.

Technical Manual

According to the Star Trek: The Next Generation Technical Manual, the USS Hokkaido, launched in 2337, was the last starship of this class to be built; it was also the first to receive the ASRV upgrades.

Apocrypha

The Renaissance-class was first depicted in the DC Comics Star Trek: The Next Generation Volume 2 issues 77 and 78 as a combination of a saucer section reminiscent of the refit-Constitution-class design, equipped with Galaxy-class type large phaser arrays, Intrepid-class style secondary hull, with the warp nacelles fixed to the side positions even during warp flight.
