The renewal scroll is a component of the Bajoran religious ceremony known as the Gratitude Festival. Anyone can write his of her problems on a scroll. At the festival, these scrolls are burned in a ceremonial fire, which is symbolic in the Bajoran faith of putting one's troubles in the past.
