"Then ask Captain Nero, what gives him the right to attack a Federation vessel?"
– Captain Robau to Ayel, 2233 (Star Trek)

Richard Robau was a Starfleet officer, and captain of the USS Kelvin in 2233. His first officer was George Kirk, father of James T. Kirk.

Alternate reality[]

In the alternate reality created by Nero's temporal incursion in 2233, the Kelvin came under attack by the Romulan mining vessel Narada, immediately upon the Narada's emergence from a black hole. After the Narada inflicted heavy damage on the Kelvin, Ayel, Nero's second-in-command, ordered Robau to board a shuttlecraft and travel to the Narada for negotiations. Realizing that he had no choice but to comply, Robau placed Kirk in command, ordering him to evacuate the crew if he did not report in fifteen minutes.

Robau's life signs terminated

On the Narada, Robau was questioned by Ayel as to his familiarity with Ambassador Spock and the vessel Spock had been piloting. When Robau professed his unfamiliarity with Spock, Ayel demanded to know the current stardate. Upon learning that they had inadvertently become stranded 154 years in the past, Nero became infuriated, violently killed Robau with a bladed weapon in his possession, and immediately resumed the attack on the Kelvin. Appendices[]

Background information[]

Richard Robau was portrayed by actor Faran Tahir. His first name comes from official production material, including his dossier profile on the official movie site, although the novelization of Star Trek gives his name as "Pierre Robau". [1] A display monitoring his life signs in the film displays the name "Capt. R. Robau".

According to his profile on Intel's Starfleet Shipyard site, Robau was born in Sagua La Grande, Cuba, and his Starfleet Service Number was SA-476-2549-CM. [2]

Robau was named after the Cuban-born uncle of Star Trek co-writer and executive producer Roberto Orci. [3] According to Orci, he had imagined Robau being born in Cuba and raised in the Middle East. [4]

The 2013 virtual collectible card battle game Star Trek: Rivals listed him on card #75, Captain R. Robau.

Apocrypha[]

Richard Robau (Year Five)

The prime reality Richard Robau as depicted in Star Trek: Year Five #24.

In the first issue of the Star Trek: Nero miniseries, Robau's body is ordered by Nero to be recycled into the ship's replicator. Before the crew can do that however, a fleet led by the alternate reality version of Kor arrives and proceeds to beam aboard the ship in continuous waves. After sustaining casualties, the Klingons finally subdue Nero's crew and find the body of Robau with his uniform intact. This then puts into question Nero's claim that they are a simple Romulan mining vessel. Kor then orders Robau's body to be beamed aboard one of their ships for transport back to Qo'noS.

In Issue 14 of IDW Publishing's Star Trek: Ongoing series, Robau is revealed to have made first contact with the Roylans, along with Lieutenant George Kirk and Alnschloss K'Bentayr.

According to The Autobiography of James T. Kirk, Robau served as First officer of the Kelvin prior to George Kirk.
